NBA 2K high school championships to be held in Australia and New Zealand

In a major announcement, META High School Esports has partnered with 2K, the makers of NBA 2K, to run national and state high school NBA 2K championships across Australia and New Zealand in 2019.

High schools in every state and territory will compete against each other with the winning state-territory teams advancing to the Australian Championships, to be held later this year.

“We’re excited to be working with META to bring this NBA 2K esports tournament to high schools across Australia and New Zealand,” said Alfie Brody, Vice President of Marketing for NBA 2K.

META League Commissioner Woody Wu described NBA 2K as one of the world’s most popular games.

“I’m a big fan of the NBA and it’s great to see sports sim games adapting to the esports space,” Wu said.

“NBA 2K is a great fit for the high school space as the game is something that everyone understands already and provides the opportunity for students to learn valuable lessons through competition.

“I’m really excited to see more schools support students in the esports space through NBA 2K.”

The announcement comes as META – owned by the Adelaide Football Club – continues to expand, with more than 230 teams already signed up to the League of Legends High School League.

“It’s an exciting time for META, with the expansion into new games set to engage more and more students, teachers and parents across Australia and New Zealand,” Wu said.

Adelaide Football Club’s Chief Operating Officer Nigel Smart described the META-2K partnership as a “win-win situation”.

“This is a major achievement for META on two fronts, establishing a partnership with 2K in the United States while also running the NBA 2K Meta High School Championship across Australia and New Zealand,” Smart said.

“This will allow high-school fans of the NBA 2K game to play and represent their school competitively with the support of META.”

Sign-ups for the NBA 2K Meta High School Championship are now open, please note that the tournament will run on PS4 only for 2019.

Matches will be played on Thursday nights at 5 pm in a swiss format, followed by single-elimination playoffs.
